The Buying & Planning Executive Development Program at Bloomingdale’s prepares you for your first position as an Assistant Buyer or Assistant Planner, and will teach you how to curate, assort, and allocate merchandise that makes style a creative source of energy in our customers’ lives.

This program teaches you about selecting, buying and assorting merchandise to capture emerging trends. Working directly with buyers, planners, store executives, vendors and advertising, you’ll learn how to execute a specific business strategy and be responsible for a multi-million dollar business.
Formal training classes are combined with hands-on experience working in our merchant offices; in addition to classroom learning and office exposure, you’ll also shadow in stores to gain insight into our customers’ needs and the merchant/store relationship. Success in your first position as an Assistant Buyer or Assistant Planner leads to future positions in Buying and Planning.

As a member of the Merchant team, you'll be directly responsible for the merchandise assortment offered at every Bloomingdale’s Department Store across the country, as well the bloomingdales.com site. You will be responsible for identifying and capturing trends in order to drive Bloomingdale’s business forward. Your work will be consumer-focused and analytical but will also be relationship-driven and require interpersonal skills.
Roles within the Buying and Planning functions incorporate a wide range of business concepts including procurement, site merchandising, vendor partnerships, customer analytics, allocation, marketing and advertising. Each member of the Buying and Planning team contributes to driving the business. Even as a new executive, you will make recommendations that have a direct impact on sales and profitability.

Bloomingdale’s Merchants drive the business by curating a distinguished product assortment, leveraging analytics to optimize sales, and ensuring we meet customer demand both in stores and online. Merchants strategize across channels, navigate the competitive landscape and understand the importance of innovation. Merchants focus on building strong vendor relationships resulting in a unique and exclusive merchandise assortment. Bloomingdales’s Merchants maximize sales and gross margin for each product category by identifying, procuring, assorting and allocating the products that their customer demands.
The Buyers are responsible for the sales and profitability for their category of business through strategy creation and execution. Buyers select and curate merchandise that creates a distinctive, powerful image and demand for Bloomingdale’s that speaks to our customer both in stores and online. They are also responsible to lead, engage and develop junior merchants.
Planners are responsible to drive the business by leveraging analytics to optimize sales, gross margin and turnover for both the stores and online business. Planners are directly responsible for developing and maximizing localization strategies to capture business opportunities by demographics, climate, and other unique market characteristics. They are also responsible to lead, engage and develop junior merchants.
The Buying and Planning Executive Development Program combines highly interactive training classes with hands-on experience to help you develop the technical, business, and leadership skills required for your first buying or planning role. This program will teach you how to curate, assort, and allocate merchandise that makes style a creative source of energy in our customers’ lives. You will collaborate with all levels of our executive team to analyze your business and develop strategies that directly impact sales and profitability.
Supports the merchant team to drive sales, margin, turn and growth through collaboration on the creation and evaluation of the merchandise plan. Analyze sales and stock performance, including tracking and analyzing sales and stock by location to maximize trends and recommend strategies. This is a developmental role that prepares you for the next step in the career path as a Senior Assistant Buyer/Senior Assistant Planner.
This role is responsible for managing part of the Merchants’ total business throughout the season, Senior Assistants are directly responsible for the sales and profitability of their assigned area. Collaborating with their team the Senior Assistant role is responsible for using analytics to make customer centric business driving decisions to curate an distinct product assortment, achieve sales, margin and turn for the omni-enterprise. This is a developmental role that prepares you for a Merchant role.
Buyer: Our Buyers select and curate merchandise that creates a distinctive, powerful image and demand for Bloomingdale’s that speaks to our Omnichannel customer. Our Buyers are responsible for the sales and profitability of the business through strategy creation and execution.
Planner: Our Planners are responsible to drive the business by leveraging analytics to optimize sales, gross margin and turnover for both the stores and online business. Our Planners develop and execute localization strategies to capture business opportunities by demographics, climate and other unique market characteristics.
Division Lead Merchandise Marketer: Our Division Lead Merchandise Marketers oversees the development and execution of the omni merchant marketing strategy for an assigned area of business, inclusive of homepages, emails, special projects, affiliate/search priorities, all paid digital media, and print media.
