The paid Buying & Planning Internship at Bloomingdale’s is designed to provide an overview of the Buying or Planning function and why specific merchandise is bought and distributed for a nationwide, full-line department store. Through this New York City-based internship, you’ll gain experience in financial analysis, professional development and communication skills that will provide the framework for a successful career in corporate retail. Our Buying & Planning Internship provides you with a unique opportunity to apply classroom training in addressing opportunities and challenges faced in our corporate offices.

Bloomingdale’s paid summer Corporate Internship Program will expose you to cross-functional departments as you experience all facets of driving a business in an Omnichannel environment. Our developmental curriculum, experiential learning structure, and executive panels provide the skills and confidence needed for you to learn what it takes to analyze business trends and develop strategies that directly impact sales and profitability.

What is a Merchant?

A merchant is a businessperson who specializes in the purchase and sale of commodities for profit. In today's omnichannel world, Merchant roles are complex and have a huge impact on the global economy. Bloomingdale's Merchant team is comprised of many important business functions including Buyers and Planners.

Merchants

Bloomingdale’s Merchants drive the business by curating a distinguished product assortment, leveraging analytics to optimize sales, and ensuring we meet customer demand both in stores and online. Merchants strategize across channels, navigate the competitive landscape and understand the importance of innovation. Merchants focus on building strong vendor relationships resulting in a unique and exclusive merchandise assortment. Bloomingdales’s Merchants maximize sales and gross margin for each product category by identifying, procuring, assorting and allocating the products that their customer demands.

Buyer

Planner

The Buyers are responsible for the sales and profitability for their category of business through strategy creation and execution. Buyers select and curate merchandise that creates a distinctive, powerful image and demand for Bloomingdale’s that speaks to our customer both in stores and online. They are also responsible to lead, engage and develop junior merchants.

Planners are responsible to drive the business by leveraging analytics to optimize sales, gross margin and turnover for both the stores and online business. Planners are directly responsible for developing and maximizing localization strategies to capture business opportunities by demographics, climate, and other unique market characteristics. They are also responsible to lead, engage and develop junior merchants.

Buyer/Planner
Buying & Planning Executive Development Program

The Buying and Planning Executive Development Program combines highly interactive training classes with hands-on experience to help you develop the technical, business, and leadership skills required for your first buying or planning role. This program will teach you how to curate, assort, and allocate merchandise that makes style a creative source of energy in our customers’ lives. You will collaborate with all levels of our executive team to analyze your business and develop strategies that directly impact sales and profitability.

Assistant Buyer/Assistant Planner

Supports the merchant team to drive sales, margin, turn and growth through collaboration on the creation and evaluation of the merchandise plan. Analyze sales and stock performance, including tracking and analyzing sales and stock by location to maximize trends and recommend strategies. This is a developmental role that prepares you for the next step in the career path as a Senior Assistant Buyer/Senior Assistant Planner.

Senior Assistant Buyer/Senior Assistant Planner

This role is responsible for managing part of the Merchants’ total business throughout the season, Senior Assistants are directly responsible for the sales and profitability of their assigned area. Collaborating with their team the Senior Assistant role is responsible for using analytics to make customer centric business driving decisions to curate an distinct product assortment, achieve sales, margin and turn for the omni-enterprise. This is a developmental role that prepares you for an Merchant role.

Buyer/Planner/Division Lead Merchandise Marketer

Buyer: Our Buyers select and curate merchandise that creates a distinctive, powerful image and demand for Bloomingdale’s that speaks to our Omnichannel customer. Our Buyers are responsible for the sales and profitability of the business through strategy creation and execution.

Planner: Our Planners are responsible to drive the business by leveraging analytics to optimize sales, gross margin and turnover for both the stores and online business. Our Planners develop and execute localization strategies to capture business opportunities by demographics, climate and other unique market characteristics.

Division Lead Merchandise Marketer: Our Division Lead Merchandise Marketers oversees the development and execution of the omni merchant marketing strategy for an assigned area of business, inclusive of homepages, emails, special projects, affiliate/search priorities, all paid digital media, and print media.

Requirements
  • Current college Juniors with a solid academic record (GPA3.2 or higher), all majors welcomed
  • Solid academic achievement and ability to demonstrate strong analytical skills
  • Well-developed communication, interpersonal and time management skills
  • Extracurricular activities, leadership skills and workforce experience are a plus
  • Organized approach to prioritizing projects and ability to multi-task
  • Strong business acumen and value of professional business ethics
  • Ability to succeed in a dynamic, fast-paced, competitive team environment
  • Proficiency in MS Word and MS Excel
